today at maya's art class

It was a beautiful day today, so they were outside collecting leaves...

...when they found 2 tiny kittens.
Maya asked "Where's their mama?"

She showed up a few minutes later.

Keeping the little one company. He was sleepy.

And here, back inside to make art with leaves!

Maya's favorite song right now is "L.E.S. Artistes" by Santogold.

Aca's been eating pureed food for a few weeks now. So far his favorite is swiss chard (from Dragana's friend's organic garden) mixed with pears.

maya's favorite book lately

I've read this book so many times in the past month, I think I know it by heart. I love it almost as much as Maya does. It's fun and beautiful and every detail is so thoughtful and new, even though it was first published in 1952 in Finland. The poetry, the drawings, the cut-out pages, the characters...soooooo great!

(thanks auntie Sarah Cave!)

skadarlija

Some mornings, Maya and I go for a walk in Skadarlija, an old area of Stari Grad, the "Old City," with a lovely pedestrian cobblestone street. It's a few minutes walk from our house. She's always asking to go to "The Stones."

Sometimes we walk slow, looking at the stones and seeing what animals they look like.

Sometimes Maya goes fast and chases the pigeons away.

playdoh dinner

Maya and I were playing with playdoh today when she asked me to "make dinner." Here's what we came up with...I know a few of you out there will really appreciate this ;)

I don't know if she has any innate memory of it, but I ate a lot of ethiopian food when she was in the womb.
For those of you in NYC, go get some at GHENET in Park Slope!!! The best ethiopian food in the city. (Believe me, I've tried them ALL over the past 20 years.)

who's proud now?

After much controversy, the Belgrade Gay Pride Parade happened today...and so did violent clashes in the streets between anti-gay extreme right groups and the police. The local tv news at one point declared a "successful end" to the parade--i guess "successful" because a few hundred homosexuals walked across town and no one got killed--while meanwhile fighting continued all afternoon all over the city. Hm.

So was it worth the chaos? Was it worth destroying the city for? I mean, who benefited from the mess and media drama? Are the gays more proud? Are the hooligans less angry? I don't think the armor-clad RoboCops beat any of them into being more tolerant. And I don't think the gays made any new friends by insisting on an event that everyone knew would only end in violence. (By the way, if you're proud to be something, why not just be it? Why do you need a parade?) All were just pawns in someone else's game.

What a waste of a beautiful autumn Sunday.
