spending time with maya

Maya and I went for a walk this morning, sat in the park, shared an ice cream and watched the pigeons and dogs.

beautiful day

Yesterday morning Maya specifically asked to go "out with mama and tata, not baba", so Boogie and I took her to a park down the street. Despite taking a fall off the swing, she kept repeating "It's a beautiful day!"

Yes, it's good to be Chubby... And we were reminded of that as we played next to this little boy below. He's probably Maya's age, has sad eyes and mismatched boots, and roams the streets with his brother and sister...no parents in sight.

little treats

Maya has a friend who makes the best LEPINJA (traditional Serbian bread) at a bakery around the corner. Every time we pass by, the woman gives her a hot fresh whole wheat roll and she eats it while walking through the market.

maya is 2.5 today!

Today is Maya's half birthday, so Dragana made her a little chocolate mousse cake with lots of whipped cream...yummmmmmmm.

dorcol textures

This Hipstamatic iPhone app is so fun for shooting Belgrade, a city of run-down textures and dark, dirty colors. These were all taken yesterday on the 5 minute walk between our apartment and the studio, here in Dorcol, our neighborhood in the center of "Stari Grad" ("Old City").

baby monitoring

A week and a half ago, we went to have a check up at the obstetrician's office, where they monitored the baby with this machine. here i am on my back, trying to look comfortable with 35lbs of belly pressing on my spine... not fun at all.

But the appointment served its purpose--we found out that everything is normal with "Mali Aca" ("Little Aca" pronounced "AT-SA"!), that he's a BOY, and that we did NOT want to have this doctor delivering our baby! It was pretty clear that it was his way (100% clinical) or the highway. No thanks.

Two days later, we met our midwife, Divna Miljkovic!

NYT article

another reason to have a home birth

"In an article published last month in the journal Obstetrics and Gynecology, the obstetricians’ college reported that a poll of 5,644 of its members found that 29 percent said they were performing more Caesareans because they feared lawsuits. Eight percent said they had quit delivering babies, and nearly a third of them said it was because of liability issues."
